Saint Details

Bl. Miguel Pro was born on January 13, 1891, in Guadalupe, Zacatecas, Mexico, to a mining family. He was the third of eleven children in a devout household. Miguel entered the seminary in 1911 but was forced to flee to the United States in 1914 due to the rising anti-Catholic sentiment in Mexico. He continued his studies in Spain and later in Belgium, where he was ordained as a Jesuit priest in 1925. Despite suffering from severe stomach problems, Miguel returned to Mexico in 1926 amidst intense persecution of the Catholic Church under President Elias Plutarco Calles. In Mexico, he conducted a secret ministry, using disguises to celebrate Mass and administer sacraments to the faithful. In 1927, Miguel was falsely accused of involvement in a bombing attempt and was executed by a firing squad on November 23, 1927, in Mexico City. Before his death, he forgave his executioners and proclaimed, Long live Christ the King! In 1988, Pope John Paul II declared him Blessed, recognizing his martyrdom and dedication to the faith. However, there is no record of Miguel Pro being canonized as a saint. His legacy as a brave and devoted priest has endured, inspiring many with his courage and commitment to his faith.
