Saint Details

St. Benjamin was a deacon who lived during a period of significant turmoil in Persia, where Christians faced intense persecution under the rule of King Isdegerd and his successor Varanes. Born around the late fourth century, St. Benjamin was deeply committed to his faith and became a prominent figure in the Christian community. He was known for his unwavering dedication to spreading the Gospel, which led him to be imprisoned for a year due to his religious activities. His release was secured by an ambassador of the Eastern Roman Emperor, but only on the condition that he refrain from preaching. However, Benjamin refused to comply, viewing it as his duty to proclaim Christ. Despite the danger, he continued to preach, which ultimately led to his arrest and severe torture. The cruel methods used against him included inserting reeds under his nails and a knotty stake into his bowels, resulting in his martyrdom around 424. His unwavering commitment to his faith has made him a revered figure among Christians. Although the exact date of his canonization is unknown, St. Benjamin is celebrated as a martyr and a patron saint of preachers. His legacy serves as a testament to the enduring power of faith in the face of adversity, inspiring generations to follow in his footsteps. His feast day is commemorated on March 31, a day that honors his sacrifice and unwavering devotion to his beliefs.
