St. Camilla Battista Varani was born on April 9, 1458, in Camerino, Italy, to Duke Julius Caesar Varani. Her early life was marked by a profound spiritual experience after listening to a Good Friday sermon by a Franciscan friar, which inspired her to dedicate Fridays to mourning Christ's Passion. At 21, she took a vow of chastity and decided to become a Poor Clare nun, despite her father's initial opposition. After being confined to her family home for two and a half years, she entered the Poor Clare monastery in Urbino on November 24, 1481, at the age of 23. Camilla took the name Sr. Battista and made her profession in 1483. She experienced mystical visions and wrote several spiritual works, including "Praises of the Visions of Christ" and "Treatise on the Mental Sufferings of Jesus Christ our Lord." In 1500, she was elected abbess. Following the death of her family members in 1501, she fled to the Abruzzo region and later founded a monastery in Fermo. Camilla died on March 31, 1524, in Camerino. She was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 17, 2010, recognizing her dedication to her faith and her contributions to the spiritual life of her community[1][3][5].
