St. Frances of Rome

St. Frances of Rome, born in 1384 into a noble family in Rome, lived during a tumultuous period marked by political strife and the Great Western Schism, which deeply influenced her spiritual journey. From a young age, she felt a strong calling to religious life, but her family arranged her marriage at twelve to Lorenzo de’ Ponziani, a nobleman. Despite her initial reluctance, Frances embraced her role as a wife and mother, balancing her domestic duties with a profound commitment to prayer and charity. She experienced visions and mystical encounters, which guided her to serve the poor and sick, especially during the plague and famine that ravaged Rome. Frances founded the Oblates of Mary, a group of women dedicated to serving the needy without taking formal vows, reflecting her innovative approach to combining family life with religious devotion. After her husband’s death, she joined the community she had established, living in humility and prayer until her passing in 1440.
