Saint Details
St. Francis of Paola was born on March 27, 1416, in Paola, Calabria, Italy. His parents, Giacomo and Vienna d'Alessio, were devout Catholics who had prayed for a child through the intercession of St. Francis of Assisi. At the age of 15, Francis became a hermit near Paola, dedicating himself to prayer and solitude. By 1436, he had attracted followers, leading to the foundation of what would become the Order of Minims. This order emphasized humility, charity, and a perpetual Lenten fast, including abstinence from meat.
Francis' reputation as a holy man grew, and in 1474, Pope Sixtus IV officially recognized the Order of Hermits of St. Francis of Assisi, later known as the Minim Friars. Francis established monasteries in Italy and France, and his spiritual influence extended to King Louis XI of France, whom he comforted before his death. Francis spent his final years at the monastery of Plessis, France, where he died on April 2, 1507. He was canonized in 1519 by Pope Julius II. St. Francis of Paola is remembered for his ascetic lifestyle, miraculous healings, and his role as a patron saint of sailors and travelers. His legacy continues to inspire a life of simplicity and devotion.
