St. Francis Xavier was born on April 7, 1506, in Xavier Castle, near Sangüesa, in the kingdom of Navarre, which is now part of Spain. His early life was marked by privilege and loss, with his father's death affecting his childhood. Xavier's spiritual journey began when he met Ignatius of Loyola at the University of Paris in 1525. Inspired by Loyola, Xavier eventually joined him in founding the Society of Jesus. On August 15, 1534, Xavier became one of the first seven Jesuits to take vows of poverty and chastity. Xavier's missionary work took him to Asia, where he was instrumental in spreading Christianity. In 1540, he left Rome for India, arriving in Goa on May 6, 1542. He spent years evangelizing in India and its surrounding regions, including Ceylon and the Molucca Islands. In 1549, he began the first Christian mission in Japan, where he spent over two years. His final mission was to China, but he died on December 3, 1552, on Shangchuan Island, near Canton. Xavier was beatified by Pope Paul V in 1619 and canonized by Pope Gregory XV on March 12, 1622. He is revered as the patron saint of missionaries and is celebrated for his tireless efforts in spreading Christianity across Asia. His legacy extends beyond his missionary work, as he is remembered for his adaptability and dedication to his faith. Today, he remains a significant figure in Catholicism, inspiring generations with his zeal and perseverance.
