Saint Details

St. Gerard Majella was born on April 6, 1726, in Muro Lucano, Italy, to a devout Catholic family. He was the youngest of five children, and his early life was marked by a deep spirituality. After his father's death when Gerard was 12, the family faced poverty, but Gerard remained committed to his faith. At 14, he attempted to join the Capuchin friars, but his poor health led to rejection. Gerard then worked as a tailor and later as a servant to the Bishop of Lacedonia. In 1749, he joined the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, founded by St. Alphonsus Liguori, becoming a lay brother. Gerard's life as a Redemptorist was distinguished by his charity, humility, and obedience, earning him great respect. He was known for his ability to bring people to the sacraments and was often sought out for counsel. Gerard died on October 16, 1755, at the age of 29. He was beatified by Pope Leo XIII in 1893 and canonized by Pope Pius X on December 11, 1904. Today, St. Gerard Majella is revered as the patron of expectant mothers, children, and the falsely accused, reflecting his enduring legacy of compassion and service.
