St. Gianna Beretta Molla was born on October 4, 1922, in Magenta, Italy, as the tenth of thirteen children in a devout Catholic family. She pursued a career in medicine, graduating from the University of Pavia in 1949 and later specializing in pediatrics at the University of Milan in 1952. Gianna opened a medical practice in Mesero, focusing on mothers, babies, the elderly, and the poor. She was deeply involved in Catholic Action and the St. Vincent de Paul Society, reflecting her commitment to faith and service. In 1955, she married Pietro Molla, and they had three children before her fourth pregnancy in 1961. During this pregnancy, Gianna was diagnosed with a uterine tumor, but she chose to risk her life to save her child, giving birth to Gianna Emanuela on April 21, 1962. Unfortunately, she died from complications on April 28, 1962. Her selfless sacrifice led to her beatification by Pope John Paul II on April 24, 1994, and canonization on May 16, 2004. St. Gianna is now the patron saint of mothers, physicians, and unborn children, celebrated for her unwavering faith and maternal love. Her legacy continues to inspire through her story and the establishment of pro-life healthcare centers in her name.
