Saint Details

St. Jerome Emiliani, born in 1486 in Venice, Italy, to a noble family, initially pursued a military career, serving as a commander in the Venetian army. His life took a dramatic turn when he was captured by the League of Cambrai and imprisoned. During this period, he experienced a profound spiritual conversion, attributing his miraculous escape to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Following his release, Jerome dedicated his life to serving the poor and orphans. He studied for the priesthood and, after his ordination in 1518, devoted himself to charitable works. In response to the widespread suffering caused by war and plague, Jerome founded several orphanages and hospitals across Northern Italy. In 1532, he established the Company of the Servants of the Poor, later known as the Somaschi Fathers, with the primary mission of caring for orphans and the destitute. Jerome's tireless efforts ultimately led to his death in 1537 while caring for plague victims in Somasca. He was beatified in 1747 and canonized by Pope Clement XIII in 1767. In 1928, Pope Pius XI named him the patron saint of orphans and homeless children, a testament to his enduring legacy of compassion and service.
