Saint Details

St. John of Capistrano was born in 1386 in Capistrano, Italy, to a family with noble connections. Initially, he pursued a career in law, studying at the University of Perugia and later becoming the governor of Perugia at the age of 26. However, his life took a dramatic turn when he was imprisoned during a conflict between Perugia and the House of Malatesta in 1416. It was during this imprisonment that he experienced a spiritual awakening, inspired by a dream of Saint Francis of Assisi, which led him to join the Franciscan Order.

John became a renowned preacher, known for his powerful sermons across Italy and Central Europe. He was ordained in 1425 and worked closely with Saint Bernardine of Siena, emphasizing devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus. John also played a significant role in Church diplomacy, serving as a legate to various regions and opposing heresy, particularly among the Hussites. In 1456, at the age of 70, he led a crusade against the Ottoman Empire alongside John Hunyadi, contributing to the victory at the siege of Belgrade. St. John of Capistrano died on October 23, 1456, and was canonized in 1690. He is remembered as a patron of military chaplains and jurists, and his legacy continues to influence Franciscan spirituality and Catholic tradition.
