Saint Details
St. John Vianney, born Jean-Baptiste-Marie Vianney on May 8, 1786, in Dardilly, France, near Lyons, was a devout Catholic from a farming family. His early life was marked by the disruptions of the French Revolution, which forced him to receive sacraments secretly. Despite educational challenges, Vianney pursued his call to the priesthood, eventually being ordained on August 12, 1815. In 1818, he became the parish priest of Ars, a small village with 230 residents. There, he dedicated himself to restoring the spiritual life of his community, often spending up to 18 hours a day in the confessional. His reputation as a compassionate and insightful confessor drew thousands annually, transforming Ars into a spiritual center. Vianney also founded an orphanage and served the poor, earning him the French Legion of Honor. He died on August 4, 1859, with over 6,000 people attending his funeral. Vianney was declared venerable in 1874, beatified in 1905, and canonized on May 31, 1925, by Pope Pius XI. In 1929, he was proclaimed the patron saint of parish priests. His legacy continues to inspire priests worldwide, with his feast day celebrated on August 4.
