Saint Details

St. Junípero Serra, born Miguel José Serra on November 24, 1713, in Petra, Mallorca, Spain, entered the Franciscan Order at age 17. He took the name Junípero in honor of St. Francis' companion. Serra was a gifted scholar who taught philosophy before becoming a missionary in the Americas in 1749. Initially serving in central Mexico and Baja California, he later focused on Alta California, establishing nine missions from San Diego to San Francisco between 1769 and 1782.

Serra's contributions to California were profound. He introduced European agriculture and irrigation techniques, established the first vineyards, and developed El Camino Real, a network of roads connecting the missions. He baptized over 6,000 Native Americans and established schools to teach agricultural skills. Despite controversy surrounding his treatment of Native Americans, Serra advocated for their rights, even walking 1,800 miles to Mexico City to secure better treatment.

Serra was beatified in 1988 by Pope John Paul II and canonized in 2015 by Pope Francis, becoming the first saint canonized in the United States. He is revered as the Apostle of California and a model of missionary zeal. His legacy includes the California mission system, Hispanic Catholic traditions, and significant contributions to agriculture and architecture in California. Today, Serra is remembered as a patron of California and Hispanic Americans, symbolizing the integration of faith and practical skills.
