Saint Details
St. Martin de Porres, born in Lima, Peru, in 1579, was the illegitimate son of a Spanish nobleman, Don Juan de Porres, and a freed African slave, Ana Velázquez. His mixed-race heritage subjected him to discrimination and hardship in colonial Peru, where racial hierarchies were deeply entrenched. Despite these challenges, Martin grew up in a devout Catholic household and was deeply influenced by his mother’s faith and compassion. At the age of 12, he apprenticed as a barber-surgeon, a profession that combined medical care with grooming, and he quickly gained a reputation for his skill and kindness. In 1594, Martin joined the Dominican Order as a donado (a lay helper), as his mixed heritage initially barred him from becoming a full member. However, his humility, piety, and tireless service eventually earned him the respect of his peers, and he was allowed to take vows as a lay brother. For the rest of his life, Martin dedicated himself to serving the poor, the sick, and the marginalized, embodying the Gospel’s call to love and serve others.
