His parents, who were devout Christians, died during an epidemic, leaving him a significant inheritance. He used this wealth to assist the poor and needy, following Jesus' teachings to give to those in need. Nicholas became Bishop of Myra, a position he held during a tumultuous period under Emperor Diocletian's persecution of Christians. He was exiled and imprisoned but released after Constantine became emperor. In 325, Nicholas attended the Council of Nicaea, a pivotal event in early Christian history. He died on December 6, 343, in Myra, where he was buried in his cathedral church. His legacy grew significantly after his death, with numerous churches and altars dedicated in his honor across Europe. He became patron saint of sailors, merchants, and children, among others, and is revered for his generosity and intercessions. The date of his canonization is not documented, but his recognition as a saint is rooted in his exemplary life and the widespread veneration he received. His feast day, December 6, remains a day of celebration, marking his enduring impact on Christianity.
