Saint Details

St. Paul of the Cross, born Paolo Francesco Danei on January 3, 1694, in Ovada, Italy, was a pivotal figure in Catholic history. He founded the Congregation of the Passion (Passionists) in 1720, driven by mystical visions that emphasized the importance of Christ's Passion. Paul's early life was marked by a conversion to a life of prayer at the age of 19, influenced by the writings of Francis de Sales and guidance from Capuchin priests[3].

Paul's spiritual journey led him to write a rule for his new community during a forty-day retreat in 1720. Initially known as "The Poor of Jesus," the order later became the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ[4]. With papal approval in 1741 from Pope Benedict XIV, the Passionists grew, establishing monasteries across Italy. Paul was ordained in 1727 and became renowned for his preaching missions, emphasizing the love of God revealed through Christ's Passion[3][5].

By the time of his death on October 18, 1775, Paul had established twelve monasteries and a community of contemplative nuns. He was canonized in 1867. His legacy extends beyond his order, influencing Catholic spirituality and devotional practices worldwide[5]. Today, the Passionists continue to spread the message of Christ's Passion, offering hope and healing to those in need[2].
