Saint Details

St. Pedro Calungsod was a young Filipino martyr born on July 21, 1654, in the Philippines, specifically believed to have been from the island of Cebu. Little is known about his early life, but he grew up in a Catholic community and was trained in the faith, eventually becoming a catechist. In 1668, at the age of about fourteen, Calungsod joined Spanish Jesuit missionaries on a mission to the Marianas Islands, now known as Guam, where he worked alongside Father Diego Luis de San Vitores to convert the native Chamorro people to Christianity. Despite facing significant resistance and hostility, Calungsod remained devoted to his mission and was martyred on April 2, 1672, at the age of seventeen, alongside Father San Vitores. His fidelity to his faith and his refusal to abandon his companion in the face of danger have made him a powerful symbol of martyrdom and devotion. After being beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2000, Calungsod was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 21, 2012. Today, he is revered as the patron saint of Filipino youth, catechists, and overseas Filipino workers, inspiring many with his unyielding commitment to his faith. His legacy stands as a testament to the enduring strength of faith and courage in the face of persecution.
