St. Pelagia, also known as Pelagia of Antioch, was a Christian saint and virgin martyr who lived during the late 3rd century. She is venerated in both the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches. During the Diocletian Persecution, Roman soldiers arrived at her home in Antioch with the intent to compel her to participate in a pagan sacrifice or to commit an act against her will. Given permission to change her clothes, Pelagia went to the roof of her house and leapt into the sea, choosing death over dishonor. This act was considered a sacred martyrdom by early Christian writers.
Pelagia's story is documented by early Christian figures such as St. Ambrose of Milan and St. John Chrysostom, who wrote sermons about her. Her feast day is celebrated on October 8 in the Eastern Orthodox Church, while in the Roman Catholic Church, it is observed on June 9.
