Saint Details

St. Peregrine Laziosi was born in 1260 in Forlì, Italy, to an affluent family that supported the anti-papal faction. As a young man, he was involved in local politics and even struck Philip Benizi, a representative of the Pope, during a tumultuous event. However, after this incident, Peregrine repented and sought forgiveness from Benizi, marking a significant turning point in his life. Inspired by a vision of the Virgin Mary, he joined the Servite Order in Siena and later became a priest. Peregrine was sent back to Forlì, where he founded a new Servite house and gained recognition for his fervent preaching and devotion to the sick and poor. At the age of sixty, he developed a severe leg condition that necessitated amputation, but after a night of prayer, he was miraculously cured. This event significantly enhanced his reputation, and he died on May 1, 1345. Although the exact date of canonization is often cited as 1726, there is a discrepancy noting it as 1788 in some contexts. Regardless, Peregrine was officially recognized as a saint and is now revered as the patron saint of those suffering from cancer and other serious illnesses. His legacy extends beyond his miraculous healing, as his faith and commitment to serving others have inspired countless people throughout history.
