His unusual name, Nonnatus, meaning not born, stems from the legend that he was delivered by cesarean section after his mother died in childbirth, a rare and miraculous event for the time. Growing up in a devout Christian family, Raymond felt a strong call to religious life and joined the Mercedarian Order, founded to ransom Christian captives from Muslim slavery. His deep compassion for the suffering led him to dedicate his life to this mission. During the early 13th century, when Christian-Muslim conflicts were prevalent, Raymond traveled to North Africa, where he offered himself as a hostage to free enslaved Christians. While in captivity, he endured severe torture and persecution for preaching the Gospel, yet his faith remained unshaken. His captors reportedly sealed his lips with a padlock to silence him, but he continued to inspire others through his unwavering devotion. After his release, Raymond returned to Spain, where he was appointed a cardinal by Pope Gregory IX. However, he died en route to Rome in 1240, his exact death place unknown.
