Saint Details
St. Rita of Cascia, born Margherita Lotti in 1381 in Roccaporena, Italy, is one of the most beloved saints in the Catholic tradition. From a young age, Rita felt a deep calling to religious life, but her parents arranged her marriage to Paolo Mancini, a man known for his violent temper. Despite the challenges of her marriage, Rita remained steadfast in her faith and devotion, eventually softening her husband’s heart through her patience and prayers. Together, they had two sons. Tragedy struck when Paolo was murdered in a feud. Rita forgave his killers and prayed that her sons would not seek revenge. Her prayers were answered when both sons died of natural causes before they could act on their desire for retribution. Now widowed and childless, Rita sought to enter the Augustinian convent in Cascia. Initially denied due to her status as a widow, she persisted and was eventually admitted after miraculously reconciling the feuding families of her husband and his killers.
