Saint Details
St. Sebastian, born in 256 in Narbonne, Gaul (modern-day France), was a Christian martyr who lived during the tumultuous reign of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Though he was born in Gaul, he spent much of his life in Milan, Italy, where he was educated and later joined the Roman army. Sebastian rose to prominence as a captain of the Praetorian Guard, the elite soldiers tasked with protecting the emperor. Despite his high rank, Sebastian was a devout Christian who used his position to secretly encourage and support fellow Christians during a time of intense persecution. Sebastian"s faith was eventually discovered, and he was brought before Diocletian, who ordered him to be executed for his refusal to renounce Christianity. According to tradition, Sebastian was tied to a post and shot with arrows, but he miraculously survived. After his recovery, he boldly confronted the emperor, condemning his cruelty toward Christians. This act of defiance led to his second martyrdom, where he was beaten to death with clubs. His death is traditionally dated to 288.
