Saint Details

Sts. Joachim and Anne are revered as the parents of Mary, the Mother of Jesus Christ, and thus the grandparents of Jesus. Their story is primarily documented in the non-canonical texts of the Protoevangelium of James and the Gospel of the Nativity of Mary. These texts describe Anne as being born in Bethlehem and marrying Joachim in Nazareth. The couple lived a devout life but initially were childless, a condition that led Joachim to retreat into the desert for prayer and fasting. Both received angelic messages announcing the conception of a child, Mary, whom they dedicated to God's service. When Mary was three years old, they presented her at the Temple of Jerusalem. The feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne is celebrated on July 26. Their legacy extends to being patron saints of grandparents and, in St. Anne's case, of mothers and women in labor. Although the exact date of their canonization is not documented, they have been venerated for centuries. The earliest church dedicated to St. Anne was built in Jerusalem around 550 AD. Their devotion and piety have inspired numerous shrines, including Ste. Anne de Beaupre in Canada and Ste. Anne d'Auray in France, where miracles have been attributed to their intercession.
