St. Alphonsus Marie Liguori was born on September 27, 1696, in Marianella, near Naples, Italy, to a noble family. His father, Giuseppe Liguori, was a naval officer, and his mother, Anna Maria Caterina Cavalieri, was devout. Alphonsus was a child prodigy, earning doctorates in civil and canon law at the age of 16. He became a renowned lawyer in Naples, winning every case for eight years. However, after a spiritual awakening, he left law to pursue the priesthood, being ordained on December 21, 1726. In 1732, he founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists), dedicated to serving the poor. Alphonsus was appointed Bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti in 1762. He was a prolific writer, penning works like *The Glories of Mary* and *The Way of the Cross*. Alphonsus was canonized on May 26, 1839, by Pope Gregory XVI and declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1871. He is the patron saint of confessors and moral theologians. Alphonsus passed away on August 1, 1787, in Pagani, Italy, leaving behind a legacy of devotion and service to the marginalized[1][2][3].
