Saint Details
St. Bernadette Soubirous was born on January 7, 1844, in Lourdes, a small town in the foothills of the Pyrenees in southern France. She was the eldest of nine children in a poor family, and her early life was marked by hardship, including severe asthma and cholera, which left her in frail health. Despite her struggles, Bernadette was known for her piety, humility, and gentle spirit. The defining moment of her life occurred in 1858, when she was just 14 years old. Between February 11 and July 16 of that year, Bernadette reported 18 apparitions of a "beautiful lady" in the grotto of Massabielle, near Lourdes. During these visions, the lady identified herself as the "Immaculate Conception," a title that confirmed the Catholic dogma proclaimed by Pope Pius IX in 1854. The apparitions drew widespread attention, and the grotto became a site of pilgrimage, with reports of miraculous healings. Bernadette faced skepticism and scrutiny from both civil and religious authorities, but she remained steadfast in her account. In 1866, she joined the Sisters of Charity of Nevers, where she lived a quiet life of prayer and service as a nun until her death on April 16, 1879, at the age of 35. Her body was exhumed multiple times and found to be incorrupt, a phenomenon that further solidified her reputation for holiness.
