Saint Details

St. Maria Goretti was born on October 16, 1890, in Corinaldo, Italy, to Luigi and Assunta Goretti, a poor farming family. She was the third of seven children and grew up in a devout household. After her father's death from malaria when Maria was nine, her mother worked tirelessly to support the family. Maria took on significant responsibilities, caring for her siblings while her mother worked. On July 5, 1902, at the age of 11, Maria was attacked by Alessandro Serenelli, a 20-year-old farmhand who lived with the Gorettis. She resisted his assault, proclaiming it a sin against God, and was stabbed 14 times. Despite her severe injuries, Maria forgave Alessandro before her death on July 6, 1902. Her forgiveness and martyrdom for purity led to Alessandro's conversion years later. Maria's legacy as a martyr of purity spread, and she was canonized in 1950 by Pope Pius XII. Her feast day is celebrated on July 6, and she is revered as the patron saint of purity, rape victims, and youth. Maria Goretti's story has inspired countless people with its themes of forgiveness, faith, and courage in the face of adversity.
