Saint Details
St. Christopher, whose name means "Christ-bearer," is one of the most beloved and widely venerated saints in the Catholic tradition. While much of his life remains shrouded in mystery, he is believed to have lived during the 3rd century, possibly in the region of Armenia. According to tradition, he was a man of great physical stature and strength, which he initially used to serve a powerful king. However, after realizing the king feared the devil, Christopher sought to serve the devil instead. Upon discovering that the devil feared Christ, Christopher dedicated his life to serving Jesus. The most famous legend surrounding St. Christopher recounts his service as a ferryman, helping travelers cross a dangerous river. One day, a small child asked to be carried across. As Christopher waded through the water, the child grew heavier and heavier, until Christopher felt as though he was carrying the weight of the world. The child revealed himself to be Christ, explaining that Christopher had borne the weight of the Creator. This event is said to have inspired his name, "Christ-bearer."
