Saint Details
St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is one of the most celebrated figures in Christian history. Born in Roman Britain in the late 4th century (exact birth year unknown), Patrick was captured by Irish raiders at the age of 16 and taken to Ireland as a slave. During his six years of captivity, he worked as a shepherd and turned to prayer, deepening his faith. According to his writings, he experienced a divine vision that guided him to escape and return to Britain. After reuniting with his family, Patrick felt called to return to Ireland as a missionary, inspired by another vision in which the Irish people called him to bring them the Gospel. Patrick studied for the priesthood, possibly in Gaul (modern-day France), and was ordained a bishop before being sent to Ireland around 432 AD. Over the next several decades, he traveled extensively across the island, preaching, baptizing, and establishing churches, monasteries, and schools. His efforts were instrumental in converting Ireland to Christianity, transforming it into a center of Christian learning and culture.
