St. Finbar, born in Connacht, Ireland, around the mid-6th century, was a pivotal figure in Irish monasticism. His birth name was Lochan, but he was later nicknamed Fionn-Barr, meaning "white head," due to his fair hair. Finbar was educated at Kilmacahil, Kilkenny, and later founded a monastic school at Gougane Barra. He then established a monastery near the River Lee, which would eventually become the city of Cork. Finbar became the first Bishop of Cork and played a crucial role in spreading Christianity in Munster.
