Saint Details
St. James the Greater, also known as Santiago, was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ and the brother of St. John the Evangelist. He was the son of Zebedee, a fisherman, and Salome, and was likely born in Galilee, though his exact birth year remains unknown. Alongside his brother John, James was called by Jesus to leave his nets and become a "fisher of men" (Matthew 4:21-22). He was part of Jesus" inner circle, witnessing key moments such as the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-9) and the Agony in the Garden (Mark 14:33-42). After Jesus" Ascension, James became a fervent missionary, spreading the Gospel. Tradition holds that he traveled to Spain, making him one of the earliest evangelizers of the Iberian Peninsula. His missionary work there, though not extensively documented in Scripture, is deeply rooted in Spanish Catholic tradition.
