St. John the Apostle, often referred to as "the Beloved Disciple," is one of the most prominent figures in the New Testament. Born in Bethsaida, Galilee, in the 1st century AD, John was the son of Zebedee, a fisherman, and Salome. He and his brother James were called by Jesus to be His disciples while they were mending their nets by the Sea of Galilee (Matthew 4:21-22). John became one of Jesus" closest companions, part of the inner circle alongside Peter and James, witnessing pivotal moments such as the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-9) and the Agony in the Garden (Mark 14:33-42). John is traditionally believed to be the author of the Gospel of John, three epistles (1 John, 2 John, and 3 John), and the Book of Revelation. His Gospel is distinct in its theological depth, emphasizing Jesus" divinity and the theme of love. After Jesus" Ascension, John played a key role in the early Church, working alongside Peter to spread the Gospel. According to tradition, he later settled in Ephesus, where he cared for Mary, the mother of Jesus, as entrusted to him by Christ on the Cross (John 19:26-27).
